FAST SINKING FLY LINES
As the name suggests these lines will sink to the bottom of the lake or water quite quickly. If you are trout fishing deep in water and you know the fish are lying on the bottom then this is the way to get to them without wasting time. It has to be said this is not a pretty way to fish however every angling method has its day and competitive fly fishing certainly would not be without the use of a fast sinking line.Early season trout fishing can often require means which use the fast sinking fly line and lure combination. Old favorites such as the cats whisker, nobbler and vivas work well with these methods. The use of booby flies on a short leader can also work very well however some fisheries do not allow this method so do check their rules first.
Cheap fast sinking fly lines are readily available to buy or you can easily make your own from old lines. There is also the the option to buy mill-end lines which whilst not perfect, will do the job more than adequately.
WHEN TO USE: Fast sinkers have a use throughout the fly fishing season. From the early season as covered above through to summer where trout often like to lay low in deep water where they can avoid bright light, warmer surface temperatures and algae blooms.
INTERMEDIATE FLY LINES
Intermediate lines are those that float below the surface water. They sit between the floating and the sinking line. Their use could be deemed specialist however many a fly fisherman will have experienced a particularly memorable day when the fishes activities were just sub-surface. Trout may have been taking buzzers, just as the creatures were to undergo their last stage of metamorphasis. Pumping gas into their body and forming their wings, these insects will momentarily hang beneath the surface of the water readying themselves for the final push to airborne life.
